Information for Graduate Students
Music History
A graduate music history placement examination will be administered to new graduate students matriculating in the fall 2008 semester. The examination will take place on Tuesday, August 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The location of the examination will be announced at a later date. New graduate students take this examination to determine whether they must take the Department's Graduate Music History Review course. Students who pass the placement examination may take graduate music history classes immediately; those who do not pass will be required to take the Review course (offered only in fall semesters) prior to taking other music history classes. It is not necessary to inform the Department that you will take the exam; it is assumed that all incoming graduate students will do so. Because of the nature of the examination, it is offered only during its scheduled time. Students who do not take the examination at this time cannot be offered alternative "make-up" dates, but by default will be required to enroll in the Graduate Music History Review course.
For a detailed description of the music history placement examination, please read the Department's Music History Handbook. The Music History Handbook (pdf format) can be downloaded using this link.
