The string chamber music course is designed to give students who demonstrate a high proficiency level on their instruments a chance to develop the skills required to play in small ensembles (quartets, trios, etc.). These skills include improving group ensemble, intonation, phrasing and articulation as well as matching bow strokes and speed, vibrato, dynamics, etc.

String chamber groups are coached twice a week by Byron Tauchi and Andrew Smith, and perform in a concert toward the end of each semester. Recent repertoire in student ensembles has included works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Dvorak and Shostakovich. Student groups may also have the opportunity to make extra money performing in the community at weddings, parties, etc.

Students must receive permission to sign up for this class from the string instructors owing to limited enrollment.
