Assistantships and Scholarships
Undergraduate Accompanying Scholarships
There is a wide variety of music scholarships including privately endowed, state, and academic available to both in-state and out-of-state students. Some scholarships are particularly targeted for minority students. Music Department scholarships require that you be enrolled in two ensembles each semester, one of which is Accompanying (MUS 172/472). Auditions for scholarships begin in January/February, either live or by submitted tape. Graduate Assistantships
The PTI-GA (Part-Time Instruction Graduate Assistantship) includes a $10,000 stipend (paid monthly over the 9 month school year). Students will be required to pay federal tax on this salary. The PTI-GA includes tuition and fee waivers. The waiver covers approximately 85 per cent of the per-credit-hour fee ($189.50). The full amount of out-of-state tuition is covered by the tuition waiver. Student health insurance is also covered. PTI graduate assistants are required to teach six credits each semester, a total of twelve credits for the year. The GA offer is contingent on enrollment in the classes assigned.
For the assistantship, students may teach 3 to 6 credits (1 or 2 classes) of Class Piano (MUS 111).Ê This is beginning piano class for non-majors.Ê The class meets twice a week for an hour and fifteen minutes.Ê The department has additional assistantships in accompanying.
Students will have a supervisor.
Students who have been awarded a graduate assistantship will be required to sign a contract that defines all guidelines and regulations. Review the duties and expectations of a graduate assistant to determine if the program is right for you.
