GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP IN ORCHESTRAL CONDUCTING AT UNLV

DESCRIPTION

The Graduate Teaching Assistanship provides financial support for qualified candidates who wish to pursue study in the orchestral conducting on graduate level at the UNLV. Studies include private applied lessons in conducting, course work in orchestral literature and historical performance practice. The successful candidate will receive extensive practical conducting and relevant administrative training and experience.

DUTIES

Assisting with UNLV Symphony Orchestra and UNLV Chamber Orchestra, including sectional rehearsals.
Assisting with production of annual UNLV Opera production.
Assisting other faculty in conducting new music ensemble.
Assisting the music director of orchestra activities in administrative tasks related to the maintenance of the orchestral program.

QUALIFICATIONS

An undergraduate degree in music or music education and the ability to perform in primary applied area at the graduate level required. Significant conducting experience is required.

STIPEND
Commensurate with experience: $8,000-10,000 yearly plus the possibility of a waiver of tuition and fees.

AUDITION PROCEDURE

Conducting auditions will take place on Friday, February 27, 2009. Candidates should plan to spend an entire day on campus.

The audition will consist of

1) exams in ear training test, theory, musicology and orchestra repertoire,
2) an interview; and
3) conducting the UNLV Symphony Orchestra.

Audition repertoire:

Mozart, Overture from The Magic Flute
Beethoven, Symphony No. 5, first and second movements

The UNLV Department of Music now receives and manages all application documents and credentials online through the electronic document delivery service Interfolio.

To apply for the M.M. or D.M.A. in Conducting, you will also need to submit:

1) Two confidential letters of recommendation from former instructors attesting to the student’s ability to complete graduate work at an acceptable level. These are to be submitted electronically through Interfolio. 
2) A 500-word essay defining career goals and explaining how graduate studies in music will advance the applicant toward these goals.  This is to be submitted electronically through Interfolio as a "writing sample.” 
3) A videotape or DVD of a rehearsal and performance under the applicant’s direction.
