Purpose and Focus

Courses in Music are offered for the cultural benefit of all university students and for the training of those seeking a professional music career in the fields of teaching, performance, and composition. A number of courses are non-technical in nature and may be elected by non-music majors to satisfy university and College of Fine Arts requirements. Any qualified student may participate in one or more performance organizations. Membership in vocal and instrumental ensembles is also open to members of the community by audition or through consent of the instructor.

Bachelor of Arts

Recital

Provides the option to pursue music as a major in the context of a liberal arts curriculum by offering an intensive study of music as an intellectual discipline as well as a performing art.

History and Literature

Provides the option to pursue music as a major in the context of a liberal arts curriculum by offering an intensive study of music as an intellectual discipline as well as a performing art. Students in the B.A. degree take classes, ensembles and applied music lessons with majors in the Bachelor of Music program, but have the option to take up to 25 elective credits in other disciplines as part of the degree.

Bachelor of Music

Performance

Prepares the student for a professional career or for graduate study in music. Areas of specialization are voice, piano, and instrumental.

Music Education

Prepares the student for a professional career in public school music education while earning Nevada teacher certification. Areas of specialization are voice, piano, and instrumental.

Composition

Provides the student with training in composition, arranging, and orchestration. After completion of the course of study students are prepared for professional work or graduate study. Students must show performance proficiency on an instrument, piano, or voice, and complete a course of study in the performance area. A jazz emphasis of an additional 17 credits is also available.

Jazz Studies

Prepares the student for a professional career in the field of jazz or for further study in music at the graduate level. An emphasis in performance (instrumental/vocal) or composition must be completed.
